Reynolds, Ruth M., 1916-1989

Pacifist, organizer, activist, and writer. Born in South Dakota in 1916, Reynolds moved to New York in the early 1940s. In 1943 she met Puerto Rican nationalist leader Pedro Albizu Campos and became a life long activist for independence and social justice issues in Puerto Rico. She was a co-founder of the American League for Puerto Rican Independence and in 1951 was imprisoned following a nationalist uprising. After her release in 1952 she continued her work on behalf of Albizu Campos and other political prisoners as well as for self-determination for Puerto Rico. Reynolds died in South Dakota in 1989.
