Wheelwright, William, 1798-1873

William Wheelwright was a North American entrepreneur who lived in South America for fifty years and assisted in introducing the industrial revolution there, especially in Chile, Argentina, and Peru. Some of his principal works were organization of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company, construction of the Caldera-Copiapó Railroad in Chile and the Rosario-Córdova Railroad in Argentina, introduction of telegraph lines, gas and water works and navigational aids, and development of natural resources.
