Marques (Bark)

Built as a brigantine in Spain in 1917; used in fruit trade; damaged during World War II but rebuilt in 1947 for use in the Mediterranean; in 1972 purchased by Robin Cecil-Wright and taken to England where repaired; used in numerous television programs; in 1977 sold to China Clipper Society and re-rigged as a bark for use in its role as the Beagle in the BBC tv series relating to Charles Darwin; ca. 1983-1984 used by American Sail Training Association (ASTA) to train crew members for the 1984 tall ships races; in the second leg of the race, off the Bermuda coast, on the morning of June 3, 1984, the vessel was lost during a squall, along with 19 members of her 28-member sailing crew.
