Palmer, Williston B. (Williston Birkhimer), 1899-1973
Williston Birkhimer Palmer (b. Nov. 11, 1899, Chicago, Ill.-d. Nov. 10, 1973, Washington, D.C.), General in the U.S. Army, graduated from West Point in 1919. As commander of VII Corps artillery, he participated in the Normandy invasion and other major battles across France and Germany. After the Second World War, he served as Director of Logistics, European Command; and commanded the 82nd Airborne Division, 2nd Armored Division in Europe, and X Corps in Korea in 1951. He later served as the Army's first Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Deputy Commander-in-Chief in Europe, and the Defense Department's first Director of Military Assistance.
