Hellenthal, John S.

John Simon Hellenthal was born on February 20, 1915, in Juneau, Alaska. He received his law degree in 1939 and began practicing with his father in Anchorage. In 1955 he was elected as a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention in Fairbanks. After statehood was announced, he was elected to the State House of Representatives and served from 1959-1962. While a member of the legislature, he served as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and in 1960-1961 he chaired the state Democratic party. In 1963 he worked on the Legislative Council which passed Alaska's first state code. He also served as chairman of Bill Egan's gubernatorial campaign in 1966. Mr. Hellenthal continued to be an active member of the community until his death.
