Indiana University, Bloomington. Dept. of Political Science.

The Dept. of Political Science was established in 1914.

The department remained relatively untouched until after World War II when change swept political science departments around the country. This involved expansion to include more study of foreign countries and to relate political science to other disciplines including sociology, economics, and anthropology. In 1933, the name was changed to the Dept. of Government which reflected uncertainty in the profession as to the essential character of inquiry into politics, and was prompted in the first instance by public puzzlement over the attribute of science. The name was returned to Political Science effective fall semester 1969 due to a misperception on the part of the foreign public. When researching abroad, members of the department had been regarded as agents of the American government.
