Lown, B. (Bernard)

Bernard Lown, 1921-, BS, 1942, University of Maine; MD, 1945, Johns Hopkins University, a cardiologist, was awarded the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize as co-founder of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. Lown was Professor of Cardiology in the Department of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health. He was Director of the Samuel A. Levine Cardiovascular Research Laboratory at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, and Director of the Samuel A. Levine Coronary Care Unit. Lown introduced direct current electric shock for normalizing deranged rhythm of the dying heart in 1961. He was a founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility.
