The chancellor is UCSD's chief administrative officer, having general authority across the university. He or she is responsible for establishing UCSD's administrative structure and insuring that it function responsibly and efficiently. Chancellors to date have been: Herbert York (1961-1964, Acting Chancellor 1970-1972), John S. Galbraith (1964-1968), William J. McGill (1968-1970), William D. McElroy (1972-1980), Richard C. Atkinson (1980-1995), Marjorie C. Caserio (Interim Chancellor 1995-1996), and Robert C. Dynes (1996-present).
