Mills family of Jamaica and Mills Pond, Long Island.
James Harrison Mills (1835-1896), a real estate dealer in Buffalo, began genealogical research in 1878, based in part on research done by predecessors. The history of the Mills family in the U.S. is traced back through eight generations to the emigration of George Mills from England ca. 1630 and his settlement in Jamaica, L.I. by 1656. The collection primarily traces the descendants of two of George Mills' grandchildren: Timothy Mills (who settled at Mills Pond, L.I., ca. 1705) and Samuel Mills (whose children settled at Morristown, N.J.). James Harrison Mills compiled lists of thousands of descendants (or possible descendants) of these ancestors, located mainly in New Jersey and Long Island.
