Gray, Thomas
Thomas Gray (1716-1771), poet, was born in Cornwall on 26 December 1716. He attended Eton, before entering Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1734. He left the university without a degree in 1738, but after a tour on the continent, he returned to Peterhouse in 1742, and proceeded LL.B. in 1743. Gray remained in Cambridge for the rest of his life. In 1768 he became professor of history and modern languages at the university. He died on 30 July 1771.
