Sir Laurence Colvin Hunter (1934- ) was Professor of Applied Economics, 1970 to 2003. He was Vice-Principal, 1982 to 1986; Director of External Relations from 1987 to 1990 and Director of the Business School from 1996 until 1999.
Hunter studied at the University, graduating MA in 1956, and at University College, Oxford, where he graduated DPhil in 1959. He was commissioned during his National Service (1959-61), then took up a one-year post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago before returning to Glasgow in 1962 as a lecturer in applied economics in the University's Department of Social and Economic Research. He became a titular professor in 1969, the year before he was appointed to the Chair, succeeding Professor Donald Robertson as Head of Department of Social and Economic Research. Hunter's research and teaching was primarily in the fields of labour economics, industrial relations and human resource management.
