Sonnabend, Joseph A.
Joseph A. Sonnabend is a physician, laboratory scientist, clinical researcher, and community activist who contributed immeasurably to the fight against AIDS.
As a pioneer in community-based research, he co-founded the AIDS Medical Foundation (later to become the American Foundation for AIDS Research, or amfAR) and the Community Research Initiative on AIDS, as well as the People with AIDS Health Group. In addition to creating community organizations, Dr. Sonnabend treated patients and conducted AIDS research for the first twenty-three years of the epidemic in New York City, and helped create the first safe-sex guidelines.
