Cutler, Jane

Jane Cutler was born September 24, 1936, in the Bronx, NY, and was raised in rural Missouri. She earned a master's degree in creative writing, then spent over ten years raising her three children before publishing her first juvenile novel, Family Dinner, in 1991. She followed that with a long series of novels and picture books for children, which have earned her many awards and honors. Her work has been described as tender and thoughtful, humorous and sensitive, but never out of reach of her young readers. She often takes on serious topics in her work, such as war, cultural differences, and learning disabilities. One of her books, The Cello of Mr. O, was made into a musical in Japan. Cutler says that, while plot is important, she builds her books mainly around her characters, thoughtful, idiosyncratic, humorous characters.
