Illinois Humane Society

Founded in 1869 as an organization dedicated to the prevention of abuse and neglect of animals and children, the Society was responsible for much of the legislation passed that protected animals and children. Primarily located in Chicago, it helped open branches in towns throughout the state and worked with other states. Eventually its focus was more on the protection of children and it worked with many of the state, social and religious organizations for neglected, abused or orphaned children. As much of this work was taken over by the state, the IHS changed into an agency that provided "seed money" to help programs for children. It continues to campaign against abuse.
