After teaching for several years in New Hampshire and New Jersey, Drake established a book auction business in 1828. Two years later, he opened the first antiquarian bookstore in the United States in Cornhill, Boston. Drake was a founding member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, serving as its first corresponding secretary from 1845 to 1856, and as its president in 1858.
