Clerc, Laurent, 1785-1869
Laurent Clere became deaf at the age of one year. He was educated at the Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in Paris, where he became a teacher in 1805. In 1816 he joined Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet in founding the America School for the Deaf and Dumb in Hartford, Connecticut, where he taught until 1858.
