Murnaghan, Francis D. (Francis Dominic), 1893-

Francis D. Murnaghan was professor of mathematics, The Johns Hopkins University (1928-1949). He was born in Omagh, County Tyrone, Ireland in 1893. He studied at the National University of Ireland before coming to the United States in 1914. Murnaghan received his Ph. D. from Hopkins in 1916 and taught briefly at the Rice Institute. He returned to Hopkins in 1918 to teach in the mathematics department where he later served as chairman of the department. Murnaghan was appointed the first professor of mathematics at the Instituto Tecnolâogico de Areonâautica in Brazil where he lectured in both English and Portuguese, 1949-1959. His writings include "Vector Analysis and the Theory of Relativity" (1922) and "Theoretical Mechanics" (1929). Francis D. Murnaghan died in Baltimore, MD in 1976.
