Cutler, Elliott Carr, 1888-1947
Elliott Carr Cutler (1888-1947), AB, 1909, Harvard College; MD, 1913, Harvard Medical School, was appointed Moseley Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Surgeon-in-Chief of Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1932. Cutler was one of the first surgeons to work on the human heart; he inserted an instrument into the left ventricle, dividing the stenosed mitral valve in 1923, a procedure that later became common practice as a treatment for rheumatic heart disease.
