Kansas. Department of Transportation
In August of 1975, the State Highway Commission of Kansas was renamed the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) through statute K.S.A. 75-5001. KDOT coordinates the planning, development, and operation of the various modes and systems of transportation in Kansas. It is the goal of the agency to promote, plan, develop, maintain, and operate a safe, efficient, balanced multi-modally integrated statewide transportation system adequate to meet the present and future needs in moving people and goods. The law designates the Secretary of Transportation as the chief executive officer. He or she is appointed by the Governor subject to confirmation by the Senate. Also established by law are the positions of state transportation engineer and five division directors - planning and development, engineering and design, operations, administration, and aviation.
