Corliss, Augustus Whittemore, 1837-1908

Augustus W. Corliss was born March 25, 1837 in Maine. During the American Civil War he served with the 1st and 2nd Rhode Island Cavalry, and eventually attained the rank of lieutenant colonel (1862-1863). He then resigned his commission and later joined the U.S. Army as a private and eventually, after the war, became a Captain with 8th U.S. Army Infantry. Corliss was assigned to various military posts in the western U.S. In 1897, he was promoted to the major of the Seventeenth Cavalry and served in the Cuba, the Philippines, and China before being made brigadier general. After his retirement, Corliss lived in Denver, Colo., where he died on September 4, 1907.
