Colby, James L. (James Lloyd), 1823-1887.
James Lloyd Colby (1823-1887), was born on Apr. 23, 1823 in Boston, Mass. He married Elizabeth Caroline Bill; the couple had two daughters Anna (b. 1847) and Emily (b. in 1857). In September 1861, Colby enlisted in the 24th Regiment of Massachusetts Infantry. With his regiment, he fought in Burnside's campaign in North Carolina, the siege of Charleston and the assault and siege of Fort Wagner. In September 1863, the 24th was moved to St. Augustine where it remained, quite comfortably, until February 1864 when the men were ordered to Virginia. After the war, Colby settled in Farmingham, Mass. where he worked as a machinist.
