Patton, William W. (William Weston), 1821-1889

Rev. William Weston Patton was born in New York on October 19, 1821. He was a graduate of the University of the City of New York and Union Theological Seminary. After being ordained, Patton served as pastor of the Phillips Congregational Church in Boston (1843-1846), the Fourth Congregational Church in Hartford (1846-1857), and a church in Chicago. He was a member of many organizations, including the American Missionary association and the Society of the Cincinatti. Patton was the author of several publications. An ardent supporter of abolition, Patton served as president of Howard University between 1877-1889. His first wife was Sarah Jane Mott (d. 1850) and his second wife was Mary Boardman Smith (d. 1880).
