Shattuck, Daniel, 1790-1867

Successful storekeeper & businessman of Concord, Mass.; brother of Daniel Shattuck (statistician, genealogist, public servant in Concord & Boston, bookseller/publisher, & author of 1835 history of Concord). Born in Ashby, Mass., July 10, 1790; married Sarah Edwards of Ashby Apr. 23, 1816; died in Concord, Aug. 13, 1867. Came to Concord from New Ipswich, N.H., at first serving as clerk in general store of Josiah & Jonathan Hubbard Davis. Formed partnership with Bela Hemenway (Hemmenway) & bought out stock of Deacon John White, in store that (in enlarged form).

(Cont.) is present Colonial Inn building, on Monument Square. After Hemenway died in 1816, Deacon White became Shattuck's partner. Shattuck bought out Deacon White's interest in 1823 & took brother Lemuel as partner for a time. Daniel Shattuck was an incorporator (1828) & the Treasurer of Concord Mill Dam Co., also first President of Concord Bank (incorporated 1832). Increasingly involved in real estate & other interests, Shattuck passed the business of his store to his son Henry & to Levi Wetherbee, closing it out entirely in 1848.
