Allen, R. A. (Raymond Allen), 1914-

Raymond Allen Packer, a native of Iowa, received a B.S. and D.V.M. (1940) in Animal Husbandry from Iowa State College (University), as well as an M.S. (1942) and Ph. D. (1947). Dr. Packer began his teaching career at ISU in 1940 and was Head of the Dept. of Hygiene (1952-1980). He retired in 1985, but continued to teach veterinary history. As of 2000, Dr. Packer is said to have educated 78 percent of all ISU veterinary graduates.

Dr. Packer's areas of research included veterinary bacteriology and virology, and he was also interested in veterinary history. He authored numerous papers and publications, including Veterinary Bacteriology and Virology (co-authored with Dr. Ival Arthur Merchant) and the First 100 Years of the College of Veterinary Medicine (at Iowa State). He received numerous awards, including an Alumni Faculty Citation (1966) and being named the Clarence Hartley Covault Distinguished Professor in Veterinary Medicine (1969).
