Gould family.
Nathan Gold (d. 1694) arrived in Fairfield in 1649 and soon figured prominently in town government. His descendants served as lieutenant governor and senator. Capt. John Gould (1801-1871), a Fairfield businessman, state official, and owner of a fleet of schooners trading between New York, Richmond, Va., and Liverpool, England, built the mansion known as the Gould Homestead, which later, under his daughter's will, provided a free vacation home to working women of Fairfield County.
