Spencer, John, 1718-1775.
John Spencer of Cannon Hall, Cawthorne, was the son of William Spencer and his wife, Christiana, daughter of Robert Ashton. He was educated at Winchester and in 1738 went to University College, Oxford and later qualified for the Bar. He engaged the architect, John Carr to enlarge Cannon Hall and the additional two wings included a library to house his collection of books. He died, unmarried, in November 1775 and left his estate to his nephew, Walter Stanhope, who added the prefix Spencer to his own surname, in memory of his uncle
