De la Bedoyere, Michael, 1900-1973

Count Michael de la Bedoyere was born in St. Servan, France, on May 16, 1900, the only child of Count Yvon de la Bedoyere and Sybil Emily, daughter of Anthony W. Thorold, sometime Bishop of Winchester. He was educated at Stonyhurst College and Oxford University, from which he received his M.A. in 1928. After serving as assistant master at Beaumont College, he joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 1930 as lecturer in philosophy. In 1932 De la Bedoyere became assistant editor of "The Dublin review", holding that position until 1934 when he assumed the editorship of the "Catholic herald". Upon resigning from the "Catholic herald" in 1962, De la Bedoyere founded Search, an independent Christian newsletter which was published until 1968. He was the author of numerous books, including "Christianity in the market place" (1943), "Catherine, saint of Siena" (1947), "The life of Baron von Hügel" (1951), "The archbishop and the lady" (1956), and "The meddlesome friar" (1958). Michael de la Bedoyere married Catherine Thorold in 1930. They had four sons and a daughter. After Catherine's death in 1959, he married Charlotte Halbik, who bore him two sons. Count de la Bedoyere died in London July, 13, 1973.
