King, Harriet, 1796-1874
Harriet King accompanied her husband to Australia in 1817 when he was engaged in survey work of the coastline. Three of their sons were born at Parramatta, N.S.W. before their return to England in 1823. In 1826 she returned to New South Wales to manage Dunhevid, their farm at St Mary's, while P.P. King was commanding an expedition to South America. Harriet Maud, daughter of their youngest son Arthur, married W.B. Walsh. D.B. Walsh, a daughter of this marriage, published a selection of letters with the Hawthorn Press, Melbourne, Victoria, in 1967, under the title The Admiral's wife.
