Peters, John Andrew, 1822-1904
U.S. Representative from Maine and uncle of George Andrew Peters, Jr.; practiced law in Bangor, Me.; state legislator and attorney general; Republican; elected to 40th, 41st, and 42nd U.S. Congresses and then served as justice of Maine's Supreme Judicial Court (1873-1883) becoming chief justice from 1883 until Jan. 1, 1900. His nephew, Andrew Peters Wiswell succeeded him as chief justice; died in Bangor. Nephew John Andrew Peters, Jr., was U.S. Representative from Maine; b. in Ellsworth; graduate of Bowdoin College where he studied law; practiced law in Ellsworth in 1887 and served as judge of municipal court there (1896-1908); served as state legislator and speaker of the house (1913); elected as Republican to the 63rd Congress and reelected to the four succeeding Congresses; served as judge for U.S. District Court for Maine (1922-1947) and died in Ellsworth.
