Smith, Art, 1917-1982

Arthur Smith was born in New York City in 1917. He attended Cooper Union where he studied architecture, painting and decorative design. After collaborating with another artist on jewelry designs, he later opened a shop and studio on Cornelia Street in New York City. In 1948, he opened his own jewelry shop, Art Smith Jewelry in Greenwich Village. His works were exhibited at the Walker Art Galleries, the Lee Nordness Galleries, and the Museum of Contemporary Crafts. He also lectured at various colleges and universities, such as Bennington College. In addition to his own designs, he created theatrical jewelry for various dance companies, including Claude Marchant, Pearl Primus and Talley Beatty. Arthur Smith died on February 20, 1982 in New York.
