Steuk Family

William Edward Steuk immigrated with his family to America from Prussia in 1853 finding his way to Sandusky. When he arrived in Sandusky he opened a market and a clothing business. When the business was unsuccessful he decided to try raising grape roots. With success of this new business, he started a winery and began producing native wines. This business was continued after his death in 1876 by his son, Edward L. Steuk. The winery continued; being taken over by his son William L. Steuk and subsequently William K. Steuk. William K. graduated from the Ohio State University with a degree in viniculture and was interested in growing European hybrids. Besides being involved in the winery business, Edward Steuk’s other sons Edward F. Steuk and Elmer C. Steuk were involved in music. Edward F. was a music instructor and Elmer C. was a piano instructor and spent many years studying music, studying in Europe under those considered masters of the piano.
