Irons, Evelyn

Spearing (Evelyn Mary Spearing Simpson) was an English tutor in English literature at St. Hugh's College (then an all women's institution), 1918-1921. She was the first woman to take a D. Phil at Oxford and is remembered for her scholarship on the prose of John Donne.

Irons (b. 1900) attended Somerville College, Oxford (then an all women's institution), 1918-1921. Upon graduation she became a correspondent and was known for her coverage during World War II. She was romantically linked with Vita Sackville-West and later with Joy McSweeney. In 1952 Irons came to the United States and remained here until her death in 2000.
