New York (State). Commission for Detecting and Defeating Conspiracies (1777-1778)
Commission appointed "For the express purpose of enquiring into, detecting, and defeating all conspiracies which may be formed in this State against the liberties of America." The Commission was empowered to summon and question suspects, call upon state troops to suppress local insurrections, apprehend and deport persons deemed dangerous to the security of the State, organize and finance secret service employees, etc. The Commission was preceded by the similarly empowered Committee for Detecting and Defeating Conspiracies (1776-1777).
