Griffin, Cleo S.
William Lorenzo Carter, born 1813 in Vermont, was a blind minstrel and Mormon convert, and composed the music for the folk ballad, Fair Charlotte (The original poem, called "Young Charlotte" was written by Seba Smith, 1792-1868, a Maine humorist and journalist). Fair Charlotte is known in at least nineteen versions, throughout much of the northern U.S. and parts of Canada.
