Professor Glyn Roberts, Mrs Eluned Garmon Jones

Professor Glyn Roberts (1904-1962) was educated at Friars School, Bangor and the University College of North Wales, (now the University of Wales, Bangor). His particular field of historical research was Welsh history with emphasis on municipal development and parliamentary representation from the Act of Union onwards. From 1927 until 1939, he was assistant lecturer, then lecturer in history at Swansea. With the outbreak of war he joined the staff of the new Ministry of Supply, which revealed a talent for administration leading to his rise to the position of deputy head of the British Raw Materials Mission, based at Washington in the United States. In 1941, he returned to his old university at Bangor, serving in an administrative as well as academic capacity as registrar, vice president and dean of the arts faculty, occupying the position of head of the Department of Welsh History, from 1949 until his sudden death in 1962.
