Emerson, Joseph, 1777-1833
Joseph Emerson was born on October 13, 1777. He attended Harvard University, graduated in 1798 and taught for a short time before becoming a minister. In 1818 he founded the Byfield Female Seminary, in Byfield, Massachusetts. Here, Zilpah Grant Banister taught hundreds of students, before she went on to found her own school. Joseph Emerson died on May 13, 1833 in Wethersfield.
