Winterbottom, James I., 1919-

James Winterbottom was born in Johnstown, N.Y. in 1919 and enlisted in the Army at Utica, N.Y. in 1942. At the time of enlistment he was unmarried, had completed two years of college and was working as a gardener/grounds keeper. Winterbottom joined the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Lewis, Wash. and was assigned to Company H of the 87th Infantry Regiment. He later served in Company M of the 87th Infantry, Headquarters of the 86th Infantry, Headquarters and Company L of the 90th Infantry and with Company F of the 85th Infantry. Winterbottom was also stationed at Camp Hale, Colo. and Camp Swift, Tex. before being sent to Italy. He was twice wounded in action at Mt. Della Torraccia in Feb. and March 1945 and received the Bronze Star and Silver Star medals for his actions at Castel D'Aiano in April 1945. Winterbottom attained the rank of Sergeant.
