Lawrence, Charles Radford
Charles S. Lawrence was made Private 1st Class with the Signal Corps 10 March 1915. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in Infantry 3 June 1917. Also served in 11th and 14th Cavalry. Separated from service in August 1919. Recommissioned Sept. 1921 in the Infantry. Served with the 35th and 29th Infantry. Transferred to Quartermaster Corps Feb. 1928. Student at Quartermaster Subsistence School 1935-36. Nov. 1941 he established the Quartermaster Depot at Tarlac in central Luzon.
This Depot was operated until 26 Dec. 1941, the Japanese invasion and the forces were withdrawn to Bataan. In Dec. 1941 he was Assistant to the Depot Quartermaster at Bataan. March 1942 named Force Quartermaster until surrender of our forces on Bataan. After surrender he was taken to Camp O'Donnell in central Luzon, then to a prison camp at Tarlac. Aug. 1942 left Tarlac and sent to camp at Karenko until 6 June 1943. Next transferred to Shirakawa until 9 Oct. 1944. He spent 19 days on prison ship, taken to Beppu in Northern Kiushu, then Ching Chi Tun, Manchuria. May 1945 again transferred to Mukden, Manchuria where he remained until released by Russian Army 20 Aug. 1945. Arrived back in U.S. 20 Sept. 1945. Hospitalized at Walter Reed Hospital until Jan. 1946.
