Bodie State Historic Park (Calif.)

The gold mining ghost town of Bodie, Mono County, California, is a California State Historic Park. Gold was discovered there in 1859; major discoveries in 1877 swelled the town to over 7,000. By 1887 the boom was over and fires subsequently devastated the community. All town property was eventually acquired by the J.S. Cain family, who sold it to the California Department of Parks and Recreation in 1956. Today, the remaining buildings are maintained in a state of "arrested decay" to preserve those structures that remain.
