YWCA of Greater Atlanta

Following two years of organization and planning, the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) of Atlanta received its charter from the state of Georgia in 1902. In 1912, the local YWCA became a charter member of the YWCA of the USA, and in 1915, the first high school girls' club was organized. To serve the needs of black women and girls, "The Blue Triangle" was formed on September 4, 1919 and shortly thereafter renamed the Phyllis Wheatley Branch. Expanding on its initial role of providing young women a place to live, assisting with learning new skills, promoting better working conditions, and helping with recreation and social life, the YWCA has been involved with employment agencies, camping programs, race relations, school integration, and broader community service.
