DETAILS: Richard Mortimer Long was born in Wichita, Kan., on Apr. 28, 1898. He attended Fairmount College (now Wichita State University) (Wichita, Kan.) in 1919 and 1920. From 1921 through 1934, Long was a newspaper reporter for the Wichita Eagle. He joined the staff of Senator George McGill, a Democrat, in 1934. After 5 years on the Senator's staff, he rejoined the Eagle staff as news editor. He became managing editor in 1946 and retired from the Eagle in 1963. He wrote Wichita 1866-1883: Cradle Day of a Midwestern City that was published in 1945. Long married Ruth Marie Blandon on June 9, 1928, and had two children: Robert Timmons and Betsy Ann. He died Dec. 20, 1971.
