Rochdale Pioneers Society
The Rochdale Equitable Pioneers' Society was formed in 1844 and is widely regarded as the first modern co-operative society. They devised a set of 8 principles which inspired others to set up co-operative societies. In 1944 the co-operative movement celebrated the 100th anniversary of the society.
