Education: Attended the Academy of Painting, Dresden, 1901-2. Herdorf, Germany, apprentice miner, 1889-92, coal miner, 1893-96; Jung Studio, Trier, Germany, part-time photographic assistant, 1898-99; freelance journeyman photographer, Berlin, Magdeburg, Halle, Leipzig, and Dresden, all in Germany, 1899-1900; Greif Studio, Linz, Austria, assistant photographer, 1901-02; Studio Sander and Stukenberg (photography studio), Linz, Austria, partner, 1902-04; August Sander Studio for the Pictorial Arts of Photography and Painting, Linz, Austria, director, 1904-09; Blumberg and Hermann photo studio, Cologne, Germany, manager, 1910; Studio August Sander, Cologne-Lindenthal, director, 1910-44, in Kuchhausen, Westerwald, near Cologne, 1944-64. 2002; Sander's Face of our Time published 1929: contains a 60 portraits from his series People of the 20th Century, the August Sander Archive and Susanne Lange published seven-volume collection of 650 Sander's photographs: August Sander: People of the 20th Century, Harry N. Abrams. Died April 20, 1964, Cologne.
