Gorchakov, N. A. (Nikolaĭ Aleksandrovich), b. 1901.

BIOGHIST REQUIRED Russian playwright, journalist, artist, and teacher. He was born in 1901 in St. Petersburg. From 1918 to 1920 he attended classes in theater design with Konstantin Yelev and Alexandra Exter. He began to write plays while still a student of Vsevolod Meyerkhold and Alexander Tairov at the Drama School in Moscow. He left the Soviet Union in early 1942. He then lived and worked chiefly in Munich. In addition to plays, he was also involved in the production of ballets, operas, and movies. He died in Germany in 1985. Gorchakov's most successful single play was Gasparino, first staged in Germany. He also wrote extensively on censorship and theater history, including The Theater in Soviet Russia (New York, 1957).
