Chaffin, Verner F., 1918-

Verner Franklin Chaffin was born in Martin, Georgia, on September 26, 1918. He received his A.B., LL.B. from the University of Georgia and his J.S.D. from the Yale Law School. Chaffin was admitted to the Georgia bar in 1942, the Alabama bar in 1953, and the US Supreme Court bar in 1965. Chaffin married Ethel Tison on July 17, 1943, and they had four children, Ethel Tison, Verner Franklin, Jr., Mary Davis, and John Edwards.

Chaffin attended the US Navy Japanese Language School at the University of Colorado in Boulder from March 1943 to June 1944. He then attended the Advanced Intelligence School in New York City from July to August, 1944 and was assigned to the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C. from September to November, 1944. From November 1944 to August 1945, he was assigned to the Pacific Military Intelligence Research Section at Camp Ritchie, Maryland and was subsequently sent to the Joint Intelligence Center, Pacific Ocean Area at Pearl Harbor from August to September, 1945. From October 1945 to March 1946, Chaffin was assigned to the US Naval Technical Mission to Japan, with active duty in Sasebo, Kure, and Tokyo, Japan. Chaffin then returned home and was called back into active duty during the Korean War. He served on the staff of the Commander, Naval Forces, Far East, Tokyo from August 1951 to 1952.
