Shambaugh, Benjamin Franklin, 1871-1940
Benjamin Shambaugh was born in Elvira, Iowa. He received degrees from the University of Iowa and the University of Pennsylvania. He married Bertha M. Horack in 1897. From 1895 until 1940 Shambaugh was a professor of political science at the University of Iowa, chairing the department from 1900 to 1940. From 1907 until 1940 he served as superintendent of the State Historical Society of Iowa. He edited the Iowa Journal of History and Politics was the author of many political science publications.
Bertha Shambaugh was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and attended the University of Iowa. She taught school from 1892-1897 when she turned her attention to homemaking, writing, art and photography. Her writings include a number of pieces about the Amana colonies.
