Hughes, Olwyn, 1928-, literary agent
Olwyn Hughes is the elder sister of Ted Hughes and the middle child of their parents, William and Edith Hughes neƩ Farrar. She was born on 26th August 1928 in Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire and lived there until the family moved to Mexborough, South Yorkshire in 1938.
Hughes graduated with a degree in English literature from London University in 1950. During the 1950s she lived and worked in Paris before moving back to England in 1963 to assist with the care of her niece and nephew following Sylvia Plath's death. Whilst living in Devon Hughes did translation work and became a literary agent for her brother and others including Jean Rhys. She also served as literary agent for the Plath estate until the 1990s. Between 1970 and 1981 Ted and Olwyn Hughes ran the fine limited edition press, Rainbow Press.
