Carteret Book Club

After an unsuccessful attempt to found the Collectors' Club of Newark (N.J.) in 1902, the Carteret Book Club was founded at a meeting of 12 December 1908 organized by James E. Howell. Its mission was to bring together book collectors, printers, and other book men in order to study and promote the book arts, hold exhibits of rare and specially printed books, and publish books. The publishing program emphasized previously unpublished or original material, often with specially commissioned illustrations. The club was named for Philip Carteret, the first colonial governor of New Jersey (1665) and organized as a corporation in which the members bought shares. It was dissolved in 1957. The first president. Thomas L. Raymond, was mayor of Newark. The first two secretaries were John Cotton Dana, librarian of the Free Public Library of Newark, and then, until his death in 1941, Wilbur Macey Stone.
