McMaster, John T. B.

John T. B. McMaster was born in Worcester County, Maryland, in 1827. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Medicine in 1850. He had an office in New Town (now known as Pocomoke City) with his partner Dr. John L. Hearn. In 1851 he married Elizabeth Grace; they had seven children. In 1862, President Lincoln appointed McMaster to Brigade Surgeon of Volunteers and examining surgeon for the first draft of militia called for by President Lincoln. In 1864 he was elected to the Senate of Maryland for two sessions. McMaster also held other positions throughout his lifetime including New Town postmaster, Assistant Assessor of Internal Revenue, and president of a railroad company.
