D, Univ. of Missouri, 1939; instructor of mathematics, Sheffield Scientific School (Yale), 1901-03; professor of mathematics, Univ. of MO, 1903-24; in 1924 became professor, and in 1937, provost, UCLA; served as vice-president, Univ. of CA; editor-in-chief, Bulletin of American Mathematical Society, 1921-37; vice-president (1916) and president (1929-30), American Mathematical Society; president, Mathematical Assn. of America, 1916; published works include An algebra for secondary schools (1908); he died on Feb. 3, 1943.
